Green Regents Professorship in History and Distinguished Teaching Professor at The University of Texas at Austin, who has been awarded a Center of Excellence grant from the Cultural Services office of the French Embassy in the United States for her project Franco-American Graduate Student Summer Workshop: The Old Regime and Revolutionary Roots of Universalism, Race, and Laicization. The workshop, taking place at a date to be determined, is a joint initiative between UT Austin's Center for European Studies, UT Austin Department of History, UT Austin College of Liberal Arts, the University of California at Berkeley, the École Normale Supérieur (Paris, France), the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (Lyon, France), and Princeton University.  The workshop will bring together at least six French and six American graduate students whose research focuses on the Old Regime and the Revolution in France. They will meet for a week under guidance of French and American faculty, and will explore the roots of current political and cultural debates about universalism, structural racism, and laicization.  The network of French Embassy Centers of Excellence enhances the stature of France within European Union studies; promotes France-US relations through interdisciplinary teaching programs; encourages public-private and research partnerships within France; and innovates in the realm of outreach activities to encourage student interest in France. The Centers of Excellence support the Embassy of France's efforts in University cooperation by identifying and integrating existing research and teaching activities connected with France in their institutions, and establishing a framework through which these and other activities related to France can be facilitated and promoted.
