As the end of Project D is coming to an end, the meaning of the "D" is becoming more apparent. There had been numerous speculations on what the D in Project D stands for. Some say it stands for Double Ace as Takumi is the ace in downhill and Keisuke is the ace in uphill. Some say it stands for Defeat and that the project will end with an actual defeat.
